Why book a tasting?

You’re probably thinking, why don’t I just go to a bar and drink Japanese whisky there? And yes, you could do that. In fact, you probably should do that at some point! But before that, wouldn’t it be good to learn about what you’ll be drinking?

At this tasting, you will:

* Discover the history of Japanese whisky
* Learn how Japanese whisky is similar to (and different from) other types of whisky
* Compare different distilleries and styles
* Find out that not all “Japanese whisky” is as it seems – and get some tips on how to tell the difference
* Be able to ask questions in a friendly, small-group setting

This experience will give you the Japanese whisky knowledge you need to have a better idea of what to order in bars, and which bottles to buy – and maybe even which to avoid!

About me

I am Japanese-Australian, born and raised in Melbourne, but have been living in Kyoto since 2012. I have a Whisky Expert qualification from the Japan Whisky Research Centre, and am generally just an all-round whisky obsessive! To me, the only thing better than enjoying a great whisky is to share that experience with others, so I look forward to introducing you to everything Japanese whisky has to offer!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need prior whisky knowledge?

Not at all! Beginners are most welcome! The topics we discuss can be customized based on your whisky knowledge and experience.

Where are tastings held?

Tastings are held in the Nishijin area of Kyoto, known for its traditional textiles. A great chance to get away from the more tourist-oriented parts of the city! There are some nice cafes nearby, and while no major tourist attractions are within (easy) walking distance, both Kinkakuji and Nijo Castle are easily accessible by bus, so it might be worth checking out one of those in the morning before having some whisky in the afternoon!

Are Suntory whiskies served?

Sorry, but no, Suntory whiskies are not served in the tastings. Don’t get me wrong – Suntory makes great whisky! But I feel that you can easily try Suntory whisky at any bar in Japan, or at the Yamazaki distillery near Kyoto (if you’re somehow able to snag a booking!), so I want to introduce you to brands and distilleries you may not be so familiar with. Of course, if you have Suntory-related questions, ask away!

What kind of whiskies will be served?

The exact lineup will vary depending on availability, or depending on which specific whiskies I’m particularly excited about at the time! The whiskies served will always be Japanese single malts that adhere to JSLMA standards. And I can guarantee that I will only serve you whisky that I, a genuine whisky nerd, would be more than happy to drink myself!

Can I buy whisky after the tasting?

Unfortunately, no. But I can give you some advice on where to buy whisky in Kyoto and Tokyo, and point you towards some whisky bars in Kyoto as well.

How do I book?

Bookings are handled through TripAdvisor, and will be available shortly. If you wish to be informed when bookings become available, please contact me here.
